Organized by Isabelle Lynch (UPenn) and Laurel McLaughlin (Bryn Mawr) in collaboration with the Arthur Ross Gallery, Lynn Marsden-Atlass, Executive Director, and Heather Gibson Moqtaderi, Assistant Director/Associate Curator & Collections Manager
out of actions is The Incubation Series’ second program dedicated to performance. The exhibition presents performances taking place in and around the University of Pennsylvania campus, incorporating spatial considerations into the dynamic between object and performance. Site-ing work in museum spaces, lecture halls, restrooms, and libraries, MFA candidates, Austin Fisher, Jane Fentress, Evan Curtis Charles Hall, Zach Hill, Danielle Kovalski-Monsonego, Jessi Ali Lin, Rebecca Naegele, Fred-Schmidt-Arenales, Emmanuela Soria Ruiz, and Valentina Soto explore the various actions that are made possible by working within the confines of the campus space and the temporal frame of an eight-hour day. By shifting material valences through gesture, orchestrating infinity through a work’s planar placement, or speaking to and summoning history within the space of an archeology museum, these performances propose the transmutative potential of a space-object-action triad on the University of Pennsylvania campus.
Audience members are invited to begin at the Arthur Ross Gallery, the program “hub” space, where exhibition guides and campus maps will be available throughout the day. From the “hub,” audience members can make their way between the various sites on campus where performances will take place. At 4 PM, The Incubation Series will gather at the Arthur Ross Gallery for a conversation with the artists about their works.
A complete schedule will be posted on Facebook and through The Incubation Series’ website.
