Photograph of a gate in Chine Town

Untitled, by Kathy Tang.

Penn staff member Kathy Tang will create collages of the contemporary Asian American experience grounded in photographs of storefronts associated with the Asian community. These places include majority Asian areas, such as Chinatown and the Asian plazas on Washington Ave, as well as individual restaurants, dry cleaners, nail salons, or other businesses outside of the majority Asian areas. Tang has also been photographing images in broken mirrors to transform and create additional dimensionality in this disjointed pandemic time, in an attempt to
process a part of the ongoing trauma and violence experienced by the BIPOC community.
