Independent Creative Production Grant
From Florida and Morocco to Brazil and Mexico, oranges are shipped on giant shipping containers across oceans. They arrive on tables to be consumed, juiced, and even made into perfume. But citrus production creates its own environmental injustices; it desecrates lands and waters, disrupts agricultural livelihoods, and destroys habitats. In collaboration with several artists, Gavriel Cutipa-Zorn will produce an illustrated power map to detail scenes from citrus agribusiness throughout the world. Gavriel will also create a graphic novel that centers frontline communities confronting the orange industry. Both resources will be made available for students, organizers, libraries, and faculty who are interested in delving into questions surrounding agriculture, globalization, and environmental justice.
