The Office of the Curator will invite Roberto Lugo to guest curate the next Penn Art Collection exhibition at the Arthur Ross Gallery, scheduled for either spring or fall of 2021. Lugo is an award-winning Philadelphia-based artist, ceramicist, social activist, spoken-word poet, and educator, whose works underscore issues of poverty, inequality, and social and racial injustice. Lugo will have the freedom to explore the university’s collection through the lens of his own artistic interests, as well as to integrate his own works to the exhibition, to be in dialogue with the collection, thus lending a fresh voice to Penn’s 8,000 plus works collection. As guest curator, Lugo will also write an artist statement, narrate an online audio tour of the exhibition, meet with students, and present a lecture or spoken-word performance at the opening of the exhibition.
