Alumni Art Award Grant
Jessi Ali Lin (MFA ‘20) is an interdisciplinary artist working with sculpture, video, and performance. She is interested in the performativity of the body and the systems in which it operates. Drawing from feminist history, Minimalism, and performance art, Lin examines the relationship between the performance of the self, its fragmented nature, and its location within systems of power. She will use her alumni award to support the production of a dance film and related sculptures that she is co-producing with filmmaker and artist Hsin-Yu Chen at RAIR Philadelphia. They will use the onsite machines to perform domestic movements and their bodies to perform mechanistic movements, to create sculptural forms that oscillate between industrial and domestic states. The process of making the sculpture will be choreographed as a performance and made into a video that sits between a documentation of performance and a dance film, in exploration of the site as a space where categorization is set in motion. Through mounting cameras onto the construction equipment, they aim to investigate the role of camera movement in relation to a human/machine hybrid perspective.
