Watercolor painting of flower figure

Moonflower, by Karen Kim.

Recent graduate Karen Kim will create an audiovisual project, “Moonflower,” which uses themes of cuteness and creepiness to explore Korean women’s long and continuous history of erasure, rewriting, and silencing. Moonflower asks: how does the dichotomy between cuteness and eeriness become a necessary method of engagement for female empowerment of Korean women? What are the constraints of this method of engagement? Is there a need to step outside of these constraints? With an audio compliment, Moonflower will visually narrate a story about the Moon who planted herself into the earth to become a sunflower.
