Otherwhere is a series of interactive installations and objects that problematize the experience of immigration as a constant tension between the immigrant’s gaze on the landscape and the gaze of others on the immigrant.
Otherwhere builds on work that Ana Carolina Estarita-Guerrero conducted through a research group she formerly led called “Species of Spaces.” The central thesis of this study was that the landscape we see, the landscape that becomes visible or invisible to us, is an indicator of our place in society.
These tensions became very real for the artist when she decided to emigrate to the United States. Language barriers and legal hurdles aside, her day-to-day experience of being an immigrant bounced between choosing to blend in with the landscape (assimilation) and accepting the risks of standing out. Otherwhere continues Estarita-Guerrero’s exploration of these ideas and the often conflicting states of being they describe.
The initial phase of Otherwhere was supported by an ASIFA-Hollywood Animation Educators Forum 2025–26 Faculty Grant.
