High school students and staff during the summer 2025 pilot year of Netter Center + CityRoot programming
The Netter Center for Community Partnerships will work with The City Root to implement a 6-week program for high school students in summer 2026. Students will examine their own views, artistic styles, and issues that matter to them. They will participate in creative, journalistic, and entrepreneurial processes: generating ideas, interviewing, filming, storyboarding, designing visuals, editing, publishing, and marketing a. All with the goal of sharing their vision for their education and their city. series of short form film, writing and social media pieces.
The City Root was established in 2020 as a sort of Philly-focused, online Rolling Stone. The goal was to develop exciting and important content about Philadelphia and the talented local creative scene. The project evolved from a small instagram to a website and eventually to a collaborative online platform. A Summer in West will be shared through TheCityRoot.com, social media, and other platforms to be determined by the students. The program will culminate in a screening for an audience of 300 student peers, staff, and community partners who participate in Netter Center programs.
The City Root and the Netter Center began collaborating in 2024 to engage teens in this type of dynamic, multimedia journalism. In the 2026 summer program, students will learn from a variety of City Root affiliated artists who will guide them as they create visually engaging articles, tell creative stories through short form videos, and complete the next phase of work on their documentary A Summer in West.
