The Trans and Nonbinary Vocal Workshops project is a collaboration between The Rotunda; the Penn LGBT Center; Emily Bate (she/her), Director of Trust Your Moves Chorus; and Julie Lipson (they/them), Founder of Inner Rhythms Music Therapy, and is a creative and affirming place for the transgender and nonbinary community to explore voice and song while focusing on singing anatomy, supporting authentic voice in a non-judgmental setting, and experimenting with sound, pleasure, range, and resonance, all while sharing stories about using our voices and being in community. Emily Bate and Julie Lipson, who use art for community organizing, advocacy, healing and education, will act as group facilitators, exploratory guides, and music leaders. This project, which is building on previous iterations of their “Trans and Nonbinary Vocal Workshops,” will take place over the course of the ‘22-’23 academic year. In each semester, Emily and Julie will facilitate two five-week workshops hosted at The Rotunda and the LGBT Center, each featuring special trans/nonbinary guest teachers drawn from Philadelphia music and performance communities. In addition, a three-week virtual workshop and a Master Class will be offered. This collaboration will enable all partners to expand their reach, ultimately serving more trans and nonbinary people with these free workshops.

Practice Your Pronouns, a project by Julie Lipson, creates sing-along videos for pronoun fluency and nonbinary visibility.
