  Common Press Fall 2020 Postcard Subscription

  This Fall, Common Press will be printing and mailing postcards to the Penn community. Get a sense of what letterpress printing can do from home. All you have to do is sign up. You have until December 1 to join and receive as many postcards as remain in the series. The Common Press is the letterpress and book arts studio at the University of Pennsylvania. A collaboration of Penn Libraries, Penn Design, and Kelly Writers House, the press supports interests in writing and text, print culture and history, and visual arts and design.

  An Improv Class That Enriches The Mind and Soul, Even Remotely

  The Penn Memory Center’s Cognitive Comedy program gives people with memory impairments and their caregivers a no-pressure space to think creatively, socialize, and be part of a community. It’s crucial that the participants of this improv workshop, who have named themselves the Funny Philadelphians, feel comfortable because they either have memory impairments themselves or care for someone who does. “The objective is to promote social engagement, to use your brain in a creative way,” says Megan Kalafsky, program coordinator of Time Out, a joint initiative from Penn and Temple University that runs Cognitive Comedy.

  Price Lab for Digital Humanities Launches Eight-Episode Podcast Series

  When the pandemic forced the Price Lab for Digital Humanities to cancel its Dream Lab summer camp, the team turned its focus towards a new project, a Dream Lab podcast series. The eight episodes, each about 15 minutes, feature a collaborative team of digital experts from Penn and four other universities. The Price Lab, part of the School of Arts & Sciences, funded the podcast series with a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The podcasts are meant as a “gentle introduction” for those who are interested in digital humanities but aren’t sure where to start.

  The Power of Penn Highlights the Sachs Program’s Black Artists Support Grants

  The 2020 Black Artists Support Grants were awarded to projects led by or primarily serving Black artists and practitioners. For the first time, the Sachs Program extended the call for applications to alumni in recognition of the importance of representing a variety of perspectives. Development and Alumni Relations highlighted this opportunity through their Power of Penn Stories: including excerpts from an interview with one of the recipients, Rosa Leff (GEd’12).
