Miriam Saperstein is developing a hybrid manuscript of poetry and visual art exploring yearning within relationships between people, ecology, and divinity. They will use the manuscript in readings to engage multi-faith audiences with particular Jewish ritual histories, such as the colonial entanglements of ancient demon bowls, and the relational practices of “opshprekherkes,” Eastern European healers who “spoke-off” the evil eye. Grounded in the specific desires and relationships of past ritualists, they hope to support vibrant ritual culture, especially amongst queer and trans Jewish communities in West Philadelphia.
