In 2008, Josh MacPhee travelled to Ecatepec, Mexico to work with the Komal Collective. Komal Collective was organizing the printing and distribution of posters for “Art is a Human Right,” an extension of the Zapatista’s La Otra Campaña, and more specifically, a campaign to force the city to fund art centers in the poorest neighborhoods. Four posters were created by Komal and four by visiting artists, including McPhee. His poster, “Arte Para Todos” (Art for All), is pictured here.
Common Press will organize and host Activist Prints, a series of events geared towards forging connections between students engaged in social justice work and those engaged in art and design at the University of Pennsylvania. Activities will center around the artist Josh MacPhee and the work of Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative, a network of 30 artists committed to social, environmental, and political engagement, founded by MacPhee in 1998. The project, taking place in Spring 2020, will consist of several components, geared both towards deep engagement of a smaller group of students, and towards broad exposure of this work.
