The Alice Paul Center, the research arm of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, will engage artist Arielle Brown for four public events during the 2019-2020 academic year: an artist’s talk, a public reading, a workshop on methodologies, and a public dance/prayer performance. Brown’s work connects broadly with two of the center’s academic priorities: women of color feminisms and LGBTQ studies. “Love Balm,” her series on women of color who have lost children to systemic violence, has clear intersections with the center’s 2019-2020 programming theme, an interdisciplinary investigation of violence, broadly construed. Her performance pieces on African American historical legacies (Black Spatial Relics) and on trans women of color are also vitally connected to their programming priorities.
