The University of Pennsylvania Theatre Arts Program will bring playwright, director, and visual artist Amanda Horowitz to Penn as an artist-in-residence to write, direct, and devise an original play for and with students, culminating in a fully staged production.
Amanda Horowitz is an interdisciplinary artist working between performance and sculpture. She writes and directs theater using experimental and collaborative methods. This residency not only supports an amazing experience for the students, but also marks a critical moment of change for the Theatre Arts program, as it re-imagines and expands its curriculum to address the contemporary moment and to include mediums of performance that comprise an expansive theatre practice.
The Theatre Arts Program is also reinvesting in outward-facing activities, and the play produced by and with Amanda will be staged in November 2026 as the program’s season-opening presentation. This staging will be an opportunity to announce and introduce the reinvisioned Theatre Arts Program to the Penn and neighboring communities.
