Stained glass window with flowers

Stained glass installation by Angel (Qi) Wu.

Lighting the Way is a multi-pronged exploration of developing a new technique to create modern stained glass, utilizing stained glass in activism and community engagement, and shaping the development of contemporary stained glass. Historically, stained glass windows were used in churches to inspire awe and visually illustrate a story to illiterate audiences. The narratives showcased were dictated by those in positions of power. Lighting the Way is reclaiming stained glass as a democratic tool and a practical resource for peaceful protests, through a collaboration with Fossil Free Penn (FFP) to bolster their mission to urge the University of Pennsylvania to divest their $13.8 billion endowment from fossil fuel assets. Angel (Qi) Wu hopes to gain more visibility and interest for the group, by creating temporary stained glass window installations that can serve as an alternative way for FFP to promote their message without inciting disciplinary backlash from the University. Wu aims to create 3-5 pieces for window installations, at least 3 reusable protest signs, and a stained glass QR code. These works will be exhibited in Wu’s Senior Design Exhibition in Spring 2023.
