Nathan Courtright will premiere “On remembering, ceasing to be,” a chamber concerto for Daedalus Quartet with eight other players from Arcana New Music Ensemble. Daedalus is Penn’s quartet-in-residence, and is an integral project partner. The piece, which is still in progress, will be ca. 30 minutes in duration, divided into 5-7 movements, focusing on the themes of memory & group virtuosity. Most significantly, Courtright will explore what virtuosity means for an ensemble rather than a single performer. These explorations will be more than just moments or features within the movements, but will shape the form of the entire work. The final piece will be presented by Courtright, in collaboration with Bowerbird, in spring 2021.
