The Center for East Asian Studies, the Office of Social Equity & Community, and the Asian American Studies Program at the University of Pennsylvania will invite activist, singer and songwriter Aisha Fukushima to serve as the Equity in Action Visiting Scholar at Penn for the 2026-27 academic year. The Equity in Action Visiting Scholars program focuses on using the arts and creativity as a vehicle to talk about issues of justice and equity. Fukushima will visit Penn four times over the course of the year, engaging in a series of workshops, public addresses, and public performances relating to equity, identity, and action. She will introduce the Penn community to her notion of RAPtivism (rap + activism), spotlight mixed identities and bridging cultures, and conclude the four visit series with a multi-media pitch for her podcast The Future of the Present, and a public performance at the 2027 Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival, in collaboration with the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia.
