    BlackStar Film Festival Brings Dozens of Events to West Philly, August 2-5

    The BlackStar Film Festival is an annual celebration of the visual and storytelling traditions of the African diaspora and of global indigenous communities, showcasing films by black people from around the world. This year's venues include ICA, Lightbox Film Center, Pearlstein Gallery, and World Cafe Live.

    Penn Libraries is Digitizing and Cataloging Medieval and Early Modern Texts from 15 Philadelphia-area Institutions

    The collaborative three-year project, Bibliotheca Philadelphiensis, or BiblioPhilly for short, will digitize 475 European medieval and early modern manuscripts, and additional individual pages from the collections of 15 universities and other Philadelphia-area institutions. The high-resolution images and accompanying analyses will be made available to the public, free of charge, on Penn Libraries’ OPenn database.

    Saif Khawaja, W’21 — hopeful Physics & Astronomy major and musician-at-heart — dislikes formalities. He’s more comfortable with challenging convention: his upcoming student engagement project, for example, is blurring distinctions between hard science, the arts, and how people typically experience creative works.

    Exhibit Catalog to Peer Inside Fantastical Mind of Penn Artist

    The catalog, one of 23 projects funded by The Sachs Program for Arts Innovation in April, is conceived by Paul Swenbeck, who began working with the Institute of Contemporary Art in 1995. “Out, Out, Phosphene Candle,” on which the catalog will be based, is a mesmerizing exhibit by Swenbeck and his wife, painter Joy Feasley, currently on view at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

    Penn Medicine Launches Neuroaesthetics Research Center

    Penn Medicine announced in June the launch of a new Penn Center for Neuroaesthetics, the nation's first research hub dedicated to the intersection of neurobiology and aesthetics.
