Artist Residency Grant
The Music Department will bring the TAK Ensemble to Penn for the 2022-2023 Academic Year, as the second Ensemble-in-Residence, through what they hope will be an ongoing long-term residency program: building a bridge between academia and the greater community of creative (i.e. non-commercial) music professionals. Regarded as “one of the most prominent ensembles in the United States practicing truly experimental music” (I Care If You Listen), TAK delivers energetic performances “that combine crystalline clarity with the disorienting turbulence of a sonic vortex” (WIRE Magazine) and “impresses with the organicity of their sound, their dynamism and virtuosity” (New Sounds, WQXR). Dedicated to the commissioning of new works and direct collaboration with composers and other artists, TAK promotes ambitious programming at the highest level, fostering engagement within and outside of the music community. During their year-long residency, TAK will engage in a number of activities serving undergraduate and graduate students, including: guest lectures in undergraduate classes; coaching Penn Chamber groups focused on experimental and improvised music; conducting workshops to develop graduate and undergraduate student works; hosting open rehearsals; giving a final performance of the student pieces workshopped throughout year, which will also be professionally recorded-allowing students to use these recordings for promotional purposes, and to submit to consideration for graduate programs or professional competitions.
