MFA student Xiaoxuan Liu installing work for “Close to Home,” the eleventh exhibition in the Incubation Series: a student-led initiative that fosters new ways of making, exhibiting, and seeing art. “Close to Home” was exhibited at High Tide gallery in fall 2018.

The Incubation Series is a collaborative arts initiative developed by members of the Fine Arts and History of Art graduate programs at the University of Pennsylvania. The Series aims to showcase the work of MFA students in focused, conceptually rigorous exhibitions and to provide an opportunity for Art History graduate students to expand their curatorial practices. Each academic year, the Incubation Series team produces three to four exhibitions and one to two programs (performances/screenings) throughout Philadelphia’s thriving art scene, allowing participants to build gallery relationships, engage with peers in the broader art world beyond campus, and test innovative exhibition strategies. This grant will support the initiative’s activities in the 2019/202 academic, including establishing an institutional archive and supporting a partnership with Common Press to produce a catalogue.
