Students from UPenn's History of Art and Fine Arts programs in an artist's studio.

The Incubation Series is co-managed by representatives from both History of Art and Fine Arts in a non-hierarchical, lateral leadership structure. It is not limited to those studying or pursuing contemporary art; the management team encourages students of any experience level and any specialty to join the program. In this spirit, the Series uses a co-curatorial model, with two curators responsible for each exhibition or program. An external mentorship model is also in place through a partnership with the curatorial team at the Institute of Contemporary Art.

The Incubation Series will produce a sixth year of its programming, which aims to showcase the work of MFA students in focused, conceptually rigorous exhibitions and to provide an opportunity for History of Art graduate students to expand their curatorial practices. Each academic year, the Series produces three to four exhibitions and one to two performances and/or screening programs throughout Philadelphia, allowing participants to build gallery relationships, engage with peers in the broader art world beyond campus, and test innovative exhibition strategies. Sachs funding will provide support to these ongoing initiatives, as well as to other new projects that reflect the current interests and needs of students in both graduate programs: for example, the potential reimagining of the Incubation Series’ website to be a dynamic platform that can extend the collaborative work of the Series.
