Planetary Return (Blacktronika Philadelphia) brings together King Britt and Tyshawn Sorey, two widely accomplished practitioners in the field of music, in a collaboration with scholar Jasmine Henry.

Planetary Return (Blacktronika Philadelphia) builds on a course by Philadelphia native King Britt, “Blacktronika: Afrofuturism In Electronic Music,” which he offers at the University of California San Diego with associated public programs focused on researching and honoring the innovators of color who have pioneered groundbreaking genres within the electronic music landscape.

Planetary Return, a bid to re-center Philadelphia as a basecamp for the exploration of the many innovative genres of electronic music that are rooted in and created from Black culture, is a collaborative mission by MUSICA PRACTICA / ELETTRONICA VIVA with King Britt, composer Tyshawn Sorey, and scholar Jasmine Henry. The project’s mission and planned programs include presenting a concert performance by King Britt and Tyshawn Sorey, a conversation with Jasmine Henry, a club night, and a beat-making workshop.

Blacktronika was born in the club and the streets and has only recently gained a hold in academia, re-shining a light on initiatives that are often taken for granted. This program is a catalyst for future actions. Rhythmic experimentation and innovation is at the heart of this project, which brings together two giants in their respective fields in collaboration with scholar Jasmine Henry.
