Web of Sound is a series of workshops, rehearsals, and experimental sessions to develop and refine a concert-length composition for a 7-11 person mixed ensemble of winds, brass, strings, piano, and percussion. Funding will support small-group and large-ensemble workshops, and related rehearsal and documentation costs. The piece will integrate Max Johnson’s diverse musical practices as a jazz bandleader, improviser, contemporary classical composer, and bassist. Web of Sound aims to push the boundaries of cross-genre integration, experimenting with instrumental combinations and ensemble interplay. Tailoring the composition to the unique voices of trusted collaborators, these sessions will allow to them to test musical ideas, refine notation and coaching techniques, and craft the final composition collaboratively with the musicians. The resulting work will culminate in recorded performances.
