The 2019 Monument Lab National Fellows are AnnouncedMonument Lab has announced its inaugural cohort of fellows. Chosen through a national open call, these civic practitioners and youth fellows confront the inequity and injustice in our nation’s monuments and provide bold, creative approaches to public art, history, and memory. The Penn's Museum's Public Programs Developer, Arielle Brown, is among the eight individuals and groups selected.

Collaboration Between Artist-in-Residence Mike Tanis and Physicist Randall Kamien“Having an artist-in-residence is totally mind-blowing,” says Kamien, the Vicki and William Abrams Professor in the Natural Sciences. “It’s like when I play chess. I know all the rules, and in principle, I could figure out what you’re going to do, but I’m not very good at chess. Then there are the chess geniuses who can see deep into the game. Mike is like that. Mike takes the rules—the same rules that everybody knows for kirigami, just like everybody knows the rules for chess—and he then turns them into something so much bigger, so much more intricate than what we could possibly have imagined.”

Renovations Completed at Kelly Writers House to Expand its Premier Arts CafeThe most prominent and frequently used space in Writers House is the front parlor known as the Arts Cafe, where many readings and public events are staged. Beginning last summer and continuing through December 2018, the Arts Cafe has been revitalized and expanded to make it more usable and technologically friendly.

The Sachs Program’s First Round of Grantmaking is Mentioned in the Artblog’s 2018 Liberta AwardsEvery year the Artblog, an independent online publication about art and culture (with a focus on the Philadelphia region) produces a curated list of notable people, groups, books, and other art world stuff from the outgoing year. They released The 2018 Liberta Awards on December 27th and, amongst their "Other Notable Goings On," they included The Sachs Program's first round of grantmaking. We're thrilled! Thanks, Artblog!

Seminar Co-taught by Herman Beavers and Suzana Berger is Bridging the Gap Between Penn students and the West Philly CommunityWhat began eight years ago as a class to introduce August Wilson to Penn freshman has grown to also include older Philadelphians and students from William L. Sayre High School that wraps each semester with a performance of dramatic monologues by both class members and professional actors. The “Community Monologues,” which were performed in December, were written by students and inspired by the words of West Philadelphia residents and the works of Wilson.
